I reaaaaaally like sayin "Yo What the F*ck is a Jay Electronica!!"

If you don't know the man this post is based on I wouldn't be surprised. Jay Electronica isn't heavily mainstream nor is he overly saturated *cough*(Drake). He is probably the most heavily cosigned lyricist/producer that isn't named Kanye West. He has, like a ghost, come in without being seen and haunted the game with his deathly ill lyrics and eerily melodic beats. And Jay Electronica is still probably the most underrated new MCs in Hip Hop today. Another credit to his name is his diversity. He has rapped on songs with Mos Def and produced tracks for Diddy. I could go on for days about how refreshing it is to see a rapper to caliber of Jay Electronica. He is the new class of underground excellence in the footsteps of Common, Little Brother, Mos, and Talib Kweli. The amazing thing about it is that is only half his talent. His has produced for Diddy's most recent work and for Nas. His style of production is a more vintage style. With the use of movies scores and unorthodox beats (sometimes without percussion). He is on the come up and he is easily one of the best rappers out. He is also guy who seems to be on his grind and just so happens he is married to Erykah Badu... enough said. ENJOI!

Here are a couple versions for you folks to listen to (and get some different angles lol). ENJOI!

(Artist Spotlight): Meet Moruf (aka Moo, Na I ain't talkin a cow)

"I was known as black boy with the hot flow, niggas had tims but momma never copped those, mountain gear boots, no levis Paco, jeans I was sportin hand me downs, niggas never liked me all a sudden wanna hear now, why? cuz I'm buzzing like a Bee Hive, wack ass dudes waiting for tee time". Lyrics from the song "Free Dreams" original track on the Garden State of Mind from Moruf 'Moo' Adewunmi. He is also the subject of today's post. In the short time I have come to know Moo he has really grown on me as guy of influence and substance (Definitely looked to him for help when making this blog). Has a dope blog (Streetwear Couture), up and coming label (French Exit), motivated artist, and he is a budding Lyricist. Reminiscent of the old school, Moo's subject matter, style, and demeanor is very funky and vintage. He won't spit you lyrics where he is talking about guns, drugs, and hoes but you will hear him make reference to being from Irvington, NJ or the the fact that he is Nigerian. You more than likely won't catch him without a Supreme fitted and something from The Hundreds. He is a guy trying to blaze his own path and not worried about the in-crowd or being like anyone which is a bit refreshing with all these other "hipsters" around. I had the opportunity to get familiar with his music and it just presents more of the same. Originality, audacity, and Funk. He does the Golden Era of Hip hop proud and doesn't pretend to be anyone he isn't. A Proud Nigerian who may be the best rapper of that country since Wale. I haven't had the chance to assess his full catalog or him on a full lenght mixtape or album but when I do I expect nothing less.  Always looking to plug others on the come up he had me shout out clothing lines  West A. Lifestyle, ASO Clothing, and Fan Base. Also got to show love to his team Jersey Klan, which he says is "Da team...turnin gideas 2 reality open minded positive energy movement". Other stuff Moo throws his stamp of approval behind are the blog The World is Us and Complex Mag (which he draw a lot of inspiration from on his blog). Enough with the shameless plugs... all in all dude is pretty sick on the mic so check him out. If I'm wrong....wait I'm never wrong! ENJOI!

Road to Success...

Howdy folks (Don't Judge me!) today's post is about two guys I feel like are going to take the fashion world by storm through their style, savvy, and awesome quality of products. The two young men I'm talking about are Tobi Babajide and Jason Akoi who make up the Herds Of The Fathers brand. Tobi who I met in college and Jason who I have known since our freshman year of High school are now well  into starting their adult lives. They are doing their best at trying to follow their dreams and are blazing the path to do so with with some of the craziest quality of products that I've ever seen. These are two guys in college trying to make a name for themselves and they are doing a pretty good job of it (I mean we're doin a post on them lol..I kid). Every time I speak to them or check up on the blog they are doing some kind of work to advance their brand and trying to get their name out to prepare for the ever approaching launch. I have been a fan ever since I got that first message with a link saying they were starting the brand. Its awesome to see all the moves they made and watch all their work come to fruition. I've watched where they started and where they are now and I'm pretty sure they are going to have endless success. They will be bringing you the best and premium quality in leather book bags, duffel bag, wallets, coin purses, scarves, and moccasins. I've already gotten a look at their duffel bag and its definitely on my Christmas list. No word on the official release date but look out for them late December 2009/Early January 2010. I've given these guys enough promo. Now I'll put faces to the names and visuals to their dreams. ENJOI!

I Believe I Can FLY!

Whats goin on folks.. Its December 1st can you believe it!(feels like the year flew by) It is the end of the year, the midst of the holiday season and it is also the continuation of a countdown that has been goin on for about 4 months for me. in 23 days on 12/24/2009 one of the most sought after pair of kicks will be re-released for the first time in almost 9 years. I'm talking about Jordan XI Space Jams! These sneakers are probably the most beautiful pair of kicks I've ever seen (next to the Hare VIIs Carmine VIs, and Grape Vs lol) and I will be doing everything in my power to attain a pair on the 24th of December. They are any Sneakerheads dream kicks and also one of the most sought after kicks EVER! Actually a DS(deadstock) pair from the Orginal 1996 release (only 5 pairs) went for $11,000+...(YES THATS 3 zeros!)  Any legitimate Sneakerhead (me being one of them) will be going to or has already copped a pair.. In about 12 days I going to post them as my profile pic on my facebook and buckling down on exams(and clear my schedule) so I can mentally prepare myself for the utter pandemonium that is going to commence when these sneakers are released on that day. I was actually plotting to buy 2 pairs but money's tight and you know we are in a recession so one pair will have to do. But for now its just marking my calender and counting the hours until they release... So Ill leave you folks with these picks and oogle over them as I do EVERY single day. Later for now... And the Winner is...

So every year I choose a song that defines my year. Whether it be the ups and downs or a song I could just bang to over and over and over and over again. I basically pick my song of the year. past couple of years were some real great tracks in my opinion. 2007: Us Placers - CRS(Lupe, Kanye West, Pharell) -[Well it was technically early 08 but it still won out lol]. 2008: Swagger Like Us - TI feat Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Jay-Z [<--- Def might be my song of the Decade lol but we will get to that later].. Now on to the ever pressing issue of 2009s SONG OF THE YEAR!!! Well I will let you guys help me decide here are the options:

1.Pretty Girls - Wale Ft. Gucci Mane
2. Pretty Wings - Maxwell
3. Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys
4. A Star is Born - Jay-Z ft. J. Cole
5. Wasted(Remix) - Gucci Mane ft. Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, Birdman

VOTE!!

Uhhh, Lupe Still Got it Folks!

What irks me about the "music scene" is the consensus when I talk with people or read blogs is that after Jay-Z, Kanye, Eminem, & Weezy there's everyone else. I laugh at this because in terms of sales yeah I guess you can say that. But Ive never held sales over talent, appeal, skill, impact. The wave of artists who ALWAYS get left in this secondary room are guys like Nas (yeah I know legend but you would be shocked how many idiots call themselves Hip Hop experts), Joe Budden,  Ludacris, Jadakiss, Fabolous, Andre 3000, Lupe Fiasco, and I could go on for days. Sidebar- MTV's hottest MC's list was a joke (even Q-Tip said that so uhhh yeah Im gonna agree with that) But for the sake of this blog post Im gonna focus on one of Chicago's Finest Mr. Fiasco. And if you dont agree with me listen to Lupe's newest mixtape Enemy of the State which is better than I dont know 80% of the albums that dropped this year. 1 Track (yes, absolute genius who does that!) & 22 minutes of brilliance. He hasnt fallen off, slowed down, or even come close to crossing over. He continues to come out with top flight Hip Hop with concrete mixtapes as well as solid studio albums. Hes in my top ten & if you have the gaul to call yourself a Hip Hop Head he better be in yours.

The 'U' featured on NigeriaMusicMovement.com

The first of what will surely be many website, magazine, blog, video features for the Jersey Native. The 'U' has been featured on NigerianMusicMovement.com The feature has 4 exclusive tracks off 'U' Jersey Vol 1 & 2 (Double CD) which was released in September as well as a brief personal bio of each straight from The 'U' himself. Ol' School Back Packer, throwback, son of Nigerian immigrants, funny, goofy, unique dude who goes by one letter, or just mad African. If you ask him which title he would prefer he would probably say all of them!

The 'U's Feature on NIgerian Music Movement

(Artist Spotlight): I Rocks with the Boogie man

This guy to the right is one of my favorite artist (and probably one of the most underrated calls himself the "Don Cheadle of the rap game" lol). I have the honor of saying that I went to high school with him (how many folks can say that lol). Also notice that I said artist and not rapper because his art is as far reaching and expansive as you can think of. Some of the most eclectic stuff I have ever heard.. One of my favorite songs from him The "New Shoes" Song (I go bang) Has a funky mix of hip hop with 80s pop and M.I.A. and thats still not even the tip of the Iceberg. He writes poetry, he is a lyricist, plays several instruments, he produces his own music. On top of all that the guy runs his own website and has his own blog. I mean the dudes pretty awesome. And with all of that he is still as humble a guy as you will ever meet.  Checkout his sites. Has bunch of free music for download and some pretty interesting stuff on his blog. I'm a fan and Im sure you will be to. I would like to present to you guys my man Sah Ril.

Gangsta is SOOOO 2007

Whats good people. This is a collaborative post from me (Sdot) and The 'U'. We are huge hip hop fans even of the new wave of guys. (Check my post about Class is in Session-[shameless plug]). Three of those guys that are doing it real BIG! And I guess you could have each VOQ member be correlated to them - Wale(The U), Kid Cudi(Yours Truly), and Drake(Hudini)... (Although my style probably more reflects Wale but in terms of fandom 'accurate).. So to the post at hand lol.. These fellas got a pretty fresh spread in the upcoming December Issue of GQ magazine that has been gettin a lot of attention on a bunch of other sites.. Im not a fan of reposting... But I'm Only 1/3 of VOQ so I got to do what my peeps suggest. It is news worthy though.. Check em out..

If Jersey had its own Currency...

I have over the course of this year met and spoken to many rappers(and other music artist) from Jersey and other places. Asking for Reviews, and to listen to their mixtape or singles or LP.. but one guy I got the chance to actually meet (who has stood out) and have built good networking relationship with is a dude by the name of H-Money. The second independent MC(and I don't use this term lightly) I had the chance to review his mixtape the Umbrella Mixtape (free for download). Since then we developed a good line of communication and he has helped to introduce me to some the premier Jersey artist, lyricist and the like(for that I am greatful) and I have helped him to expand his lyrical range and to continually improve as an artist (Win/Win situation... I know lol). Now its time for me to introduce him to you guys. SO GET FAMILIAR because you will be seeing him in the future. Also look out for the I'm So Jersey Mixtape coming NOV. 20TH.

'U' Will Know Him

I think I'm going to take a line from two of my favorite artists/people I look up to (Wale Folarin & 'Moo')...I'm not a rapper. Im not! I'm an artist! I'm an artist who just happens to rap or rhyme over instrumentals or whatever the kids call it these days. Yes, I started out a comedian a few years back but the thing with me is when youve grown up in Newark/East Orange, NJ & have Nigerian immigrants for parents & lived through and experienced the things I have you have to smile & laugh. In the midst of my pain my joy is not too far away. I love music so much & care about the direction of it (Hip Hop in particular) so much that if I didnt decide to throw in my 2 cents and be apart of it I'd never be able to live with myself. What separates me from the other Billion cats on this earth in this "rat race" for a record deal, money, cars, big booty girls, & fame? Well for starters I'm not in it for any of that. Rappers chase those things. Rappers chase the life. Rappers chase dreams. Artists live dreams. Artists turn dreams into reality. When you hear a song by me you see the song. You see my words & feel what Im feeling. Its easy to take on a name, gimmick, or persona. I refused to do that. Which is why I took on the 'U' My first, middle, & last letter in my government name ('U'goch'U'kw'U'). And everytime you see not hear one of my songs, you will understand what the big deal is about the kid who goes by one letter. Because seriously to be honest with you, all I need is one letter to make you understand 'U'

I took it upon myself to do an artist highlight for some of the newest rising starts within hip hop.. So here is the first in my series of videos that I call Class is in Session! All I See Is Visions

I have sat and pondered and contemplated on whether or not me and my two wild ass counterparts(Ugo and Husani - You'll meet them soon enough) were going to start a blog.... EVERYBODY and they MAMA has got a blog!!!! So what is going to make us standout...Is it that I do Video reviews of artist that are virtually unknown to the outside world. Naa! That I give my 100% NO BULLSHIT reviews of all the latest music. NOPE! That My best friend (Ugo) who will be deeply involved in this blog is also a rising artist himself. HELL NO! Is it that he(Ugo) in the span of less than a year, started rapping, wrote, recorded and released his mixtape THE U JERSEY MIXTAPE VOL 1 & 2.. Not even! Does it matter that my other best friend (Husani) can probably give you the most detailed assessment of a Hip Hop album you will ever receive.. NO!What is going to help Visions of Quest Standout is that we FUCKIN LOVE Hip hop (music in general but this genre more so than any other) and that we virtually have Doctorates in the field when it comes to it.  Each one of us holds true to the concept of H.E.R.(Hip Hop in its essence is Real) since we were all about 9 years old... So Everyone else has a blog but not like Visions oooooooohhhhh boy not like Visions. So we will work our hardest to make our shit better.. I would say stand out but everybody wants to standout. We Want to be BETTER and that's what we are going to do. So here goes the first post! (As I finished writing this I realized how passionate I really am about this.. HIP HOP Oh how I love thee!)
